A Dangerous Koi Disease That Affects Skin and Gills

Velvet disease, caused by Oodinium parasites, is a serious form of koi disease that can quickly damage both the skin and gills of affected fish. It is often recognised by a fine, dust-like coating on the body, but by the time this is visible, the infection may already be advanced.

Proper koi care and early detection are essential to prevent severe complications and loss of fish.

Identifying Velvet in Sick Koi

Velvet disease develops as parasites attach to the surface of the koi and begin to damage the protective slime coat. The skin may take on a dull, dusty appearance, often with a yellow or golden tone.

As the condition progresses, the texture of the skin becomes rough and uneven. In more severe cases, the skin can begin to break down, and fins may appear frayed or split.

Because this is a microscopic parasite, confirmation requires magnification, making accurate diagnosis an important part of effective koi care.

Sick Koi Symptoms to Watch For

Koi affected by Velvet disease may display a range of sick koi symptoms, including:

  • A fine, dusty or velvety coating on the skin
  • Yellowish or golden discoloration
  • Clamped or damaged fins
  • Skin irritation or visible breakdown
  • Lethargy and reduced activity
  • Laboured or rapid breathing

As the disease progresses, damage to the gills can limit oxygen intake, putting the fish under significant stress.

Koi Care, Risks and Treatment Guidance

Velvet disease weakens the natural protective barrier of koi, making them more vulnerable to secondary infections such as bacteria and fungus. This can quickly turn an already serious koi disease into a more complex health issue.

Because Velvet can resemble other parasitic infections, relying on visual symptoms alone is not enough. Misidentifying the condition can lead to incorrect treatment and further harm.

If you notice any sick koi symptoms or suspect koi disease in your pond, a professional koi consultation is strongly recommended. Accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment are essential to restore fish health and maintain a stable pond environment.
